About Kapiti Plants
"Regional Plants for Local Landscapes"
At Kapiti Plants, we believe it is important to source our native plants from the local region when possible. This is often referred to as 'eco-sourcing'.
As well as New Zealand natives, we also grow a wide range of suiablt exotics for our region including deciduous trees, camelias, shrubs, and colourful perennials.
Eco-sourcing
Following the recommendations of the Kapiti Coast Distric Council KCDC) and the Wellington Regional Council (WRC), we grow the trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers which suit the different zones within our region.
A practical example of eco-sourcing would be planting 'duneland' plants that have adapted over time, which are best suited to our harsh coastal environment.
Why would I grow locally sourced plants?
1. Species already proven and suited to a locality will provide optimum growth and minimum maintenance.
2. Improve and restore biodiversity by creating environments and habitats that support a more diverse range of animal species (such as Tui, Wood Pigeon) and dependant plants.
3. Reduce erosion and improve soil stability. For example, some natives such as Pingao and Spinifex are better designed to stabilise foredunes to re-establish smooth dune profiles.
4. Improve scenic value and restore the natural character of the Wellington Region through the use of native plants found naturally in their zones.
5. Natives closely planted can be used effectively as natural weed suppressants.
